Biblical Exegesis: Resources & Texts

This grammar has a fantastic index, a beautiful layout, and provides an uptodate summary of New Testament Syntax. However, many of the conclusions drawn in this book are driven by exegesis, and not grammar. It also has the tendency to provide more categories than are warranted by grammar.

Though this grammar is outdated but it is well organized and provides clear explanations.

This synatax is much like Wallace in that he attempts to explain and demonstrate the discussion of syntax in exegeticaly significant texts. Young has embraced modern linguistics much more than Wallace has, and he even takes the discussion of grammar beyond the sentence and has helpful chapters on discourse analysis and figures of speech. However, it is not as well laid out as Wallace, and the index is not as thorough. Also, Young's embrace of the Generative Transformational school of linguistics does not reflect current trends in linguistics.

This book provides many examples for each of the categories. It is brief and to the point, however it is hampered by holding to the historical notion that NT Greek had 8 cases.

This is a teaching grammar and not a reference grammar, so the organization is pedagogical and not systematic. However, there are many great observations on syntax and morphology if you use the index carefully.

Not a grammar in the traditional sense. This book highlights the more surprising elements of Biblical Greek. It can be a very helpful book.

This also is not a traditional grammar, it does however try to highlight the nuances in many different grammatical and syntactical features of the language of the NT.

This book is helpful to some extent. Some times the explanations provided in this work are more clear and straightforward than those provided in AT Robertson's larger Grammar.

This book is not a systematic grammar, rather it looks at "patterns of usage" of NT Greek. It highlights unusual constructions, and nuances for different structures and grammatical features. It can be a very helpful book, but will not necessarily address every Grammatical question, mostly just stylistic and syntactical concerns.

This is a specialized grammar of the Greek verb. It is the masterpiece of William Goodwin who taught Classical Greek at Harvard in the 19th century. It is more thorough than Burton's book, but deals primarily with Classical Greek.

This is a fatastic reference for all questions regarding morphology. Mounce is not content to show the forms, but describes why each form is the way it is. He describes how the forms have changed over the course of the Greek language. The index in the back provides a list of every word in the NT, and points to where those forms are discussed.

Buck uses Greek and Latin as a basis for talking about Proto-Indo-European Linguistics. Buck uses clear language and lots of paradigms and charts to introduce the rules of sound change to students. Though there are significant aspects of comparative linguistics that are now better understood, Buck is still a very helpful resource.

This book has helpful essays summerizing various advances in Greek grammar, lexicography, and general linguistics. It is a helpful summary of current understandings of linguistics and Greek grammar.
