Reference managers are easy-to-use tools that can help you collect, organize, cite, and share research sources. This guide will explain how to install Zotero and Mendeley.

What are Collections and Tags

To help you with your research, Zotero allows you to organize your citations to make it easier to search and group resources into subjects or themes.

There is more than one way to organize your citations:

  • Create folders (collections) and/or subfolders (subcollections)
  • Add tags to your items
  • Create searchable notes
  • Create saved searches

Using Saved Searches to Add to your Collections

You can perform an advanced search by clicking on the magnifying glass  in the toolbar. 

Advanced searches can be saved and appear with your other collections/folders but with a different icon

Any additional records that meet this search criteria are automatically added to the collection when they are added to Zotero.
